This is the sacred banyan tree of Cheung Chau. I had read about it in one of my guidebooks, so I asked Betty if she knew where it was- she led me right to it. It sits almost in the middle of a road but clearly a place of worship, since it is considered to be the dwelling place of the spirit of health and fertility. The stand in front of the tree is a sandbox for the sticks of incense.
