Once you pass the Gate of Heavenly Peace, you travel the courtyard this this gate, the Meridan Gate, the proper entrance to the Forbidden City's inner court. This gate was first built in 1420, and renovated in 1647 and 1801. Also called the Five Phoenix Tower, this gate had separate entrances for the court officials (on the right) and the Imperial family (on the left.)
