The circular altar at the Temple of Heaven. This three-tired marble terrace is an open altar built in 1530 and enlarged in 1749 by the Ming Emperor Qianlong. The emperors burned bundles of silk to gain the ear of the gods and thus commune with the cosmos from this platform, which is said to possess voice magnifying properties for those standing at the center.
