This is the Summer Palace, the summer house for the emperors for eight centuries. The present outlines were created by Emperor Qianlong, who enlarged the pretty lake and added the pavilions to the shore. The Summer Palace was destroyed in 1860 by invading French and British troops, and rebuilt twice by the Dowager Empress Cixi. The Summer Palace standing today is the second recreation, completed in 1903.
